In an attempt to make this blog work I need to post more. The less I post, the less inclined I will be to keep posting. It’s happened before. So I’m going to make two posts a week, minimum, from now on. Let’s hope I can keep my word on that. I’m putting it down here just to put the pressure on myself.

And so lets get started! I know I said I’d talk about what I was working on, but because it hasn’t come to a conclusion yet, I’d rather save that for later. Instead I’m going to try something a bit different and go through the process of coming up with a new logo/banner for this site while I try to go through it myself.

The name In Transition was put up there as the old name (‘I suck at Poker’) clearly no longer applied. The more often I think about it though, the more I think it’s appropriate. I really am in transition with my life right now, and I feel it has a bit of a ring to it as well. So it’s the name I’m sticking with for the foreseeable future.

The temporary graphic I made for it involved the word ‘transition’ in italics, as it helps to give off the idea of movement. I picked orange because I like it, and grey because it goes well with orange. Pretty simple, but effective I think, but kind of boring. I’m looking at either keeping the current style (logotype; think IMB, Sony, Panasonic, FedEx) or coming up with some simple image, or letter (think McDonald’s ‘M’ or Honda’s ‘H’). I just don’t know if ‘T’, or worse, ‘IT’ (and the negative connotations some people have towards IT departments) is really the direction I want to go. And I don’t feel like going to apple root and calling it ‘iT’.

I really like the idea of clever logos which are really simple, of which the picture I have attached to this post (thanks to weburbanist) show some that I really like, most especially the two on the right. The top one is for a plumber service, and the second uses the idea of piano keys to make the letters WM is just such a really well executed concept. All of them are super simple and play well with negative space.

So then it boils down to what am I going to do for my own? To be honest I haven’t fully decided, but I’m leaning towards a logotype, but a better one than I currently have. As of right now I can’t come up with a good idea for a simple logo, to be honest. I need to pick a good font though, if I’m going to do a logotype, of which I have several that I’m really enjoying playing with at the moment. The trouble is deciding what image/message I want to portray through the font I pick, and that is something I haven’t fully decided yet. I mean, ‘cool’ is a concept or image I guess, but it’s a little vague. I’ll come back in my next post with my decision and explain it, as well as the colours I use and anything else I’ve decided upon.
